In 1882, the Southern California Railroad began a new route from San Diego to San Bernardino. Theodore Loop, worked for the railroad,
and instantly fell in love with what he claimed "the most attractive place on the entire coast." He and wife, Ella, built a "city of tents"
on the beach and Ella called it Del Mar, naming it after a favorite poem entitled, "The Fight on Paseo Del Mar."
By 1910, the South Coast Land Company built a hotel, calling it the Stratford Inn. From that moment on, the hotel and Del Mar,
became a focal point for Hollywood stars. Later people like Jimmy Durante, Betty Grable, Lucille Ball & Desi Arnez made Del Mar their home.
Del Mar real estate is so desirable that many homes in development have had waiting lists, with some some selling before
they could be constructed.
