JAN 12, 2007 United States Homeless Population Tallied
The National Alliance to End Homelessness, which serves as an advocacy group, released a report January 11 that found that
744,000 people in this country were either living in shelters or homeless in 2005.
The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development and service providers from around the country provided data which was then compiled by the Alliance. The Alliance is aware that the counting of persons who live on the street is not an exact science. They do feel though that this study will provide a baseline.
With 170,000 persons homeless, California lead the country in 2005. Next came the States of NY, FL, TX and GA.
Nevada came in as the state with the greatest percent of homeless persons; around 0.68%.
Followed then by RI, CO, CA and HI
The president of the Alliance, Nan Roman, states that many of the homeless in the U.S. simply cannot afford housing. She believes that if nothing is done to make housing more affordable that the problem of the homeless will never be solved.
