Traditional Retirement Migration Sees Reversal
Not since the great depression has a greater number of retirees migrated from the south to the north. This reversal in behavior is being seen in people 75 yrs and older and is being reported by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The report is called the survey of geographic mobility and was released last month. The report estimates that approximately 121,000 persons aged 74 years and older moved from southern states while only 87,000 moved there. This activity was tracked for the years 2000-2005. A survey that was conducted 10 years prior reported that 57,000 left while 92,000 arrived.

Overall, the numbers are small, yet they confirm the observer's findings.

The Area Agency on Aging, describes the reversal in migration as "natural progression."

Mildred Morrison, administrator with the agency sites those persons that originally retire to warmer climates to return to or maintain good physical health then return again to their roots to rejoin family in their later years when their health may be on the cusp of decline.
