The following tips are offered by Jackson-Hewitt Tax Service:
Moving Expenses. If you moved, you are able to deduct costs for packing, crating/boxing, and the transporting of your personal effects and household items. You may also deduct if applicable: the insuring and storing of items for a 30-day consecutive period from the time of your relocation. (If for example, you had to wait for a new home to be built) You can also deduct the shipment of your car and even your pets to your new home. Any connection and disconnection fees from utilities can also be deducted.
Distance Requirement. Your new location needs to be at least 50 miles away from your former residence than your other job was.
Timing is very important. If your relocation happened in 2006, you can most likely claim all eligible moving costs that you incurred within a 1-year time period from your first day of work on your new job in the new location. If you relocated to a new town and then found new employment, you might also be able to claim deductions if you started the new job within one year of your relocation.
