The president of the National Trust fro Historic Preservation, Richard Moe states that teardowns pose a very large concern for the organization. Concerns are growing regarding the tearing down of structures and replacing them with
super-sized mansion style homes that alter the original character of the area.
Many cities and towns across the country have enacted moratoriums on tear downs to curtail this practice.
At the peak of the housing boom in 2005, teardowns were 20% higher than current. Most of the 300,000 home demolitions that have taken place in 2006 were due to disrepair or damage of the property.
Defenders of teardowns argue that today's buyer wants larger homes as opposed to the smaller floor plan options of older homes.
