The survey took into account local income, real estate, sales, and personal property taxes on couples that were at a variety of income levels. The survey findings are also based on a typical dual-income couple with a child of school age, bringing in a combined income of $75,000 in tax year 2005.
The ten Metropolitan areas with the lowest percentages of taxes are:
1. 4.1%, Anchorage, Alaska
2. 4.3%, Cheyenne, Wyoming
3. 4.6%, Jacksonville, Florida
4. 5.4%, Las Vegas, Nevada
5. 5.6%, Honolulu, Hawaii
6. 6.1%, Memphis, Tennessee
7. 6.3%, Sioux Falls, South Dakota
8. 6.3%, Fargo, North Dakota
9. 6.3%, Houston, Texas
10. 6.7%, Billings, Montana
As expected San Diego, California did
not make the list, nor did any other city in California. Seven of the top ten metro areas are located in states with no income tax.
