Remodelers Prefer Older Material to New
The Building Materials Reuse Association reports that a growing number of remodelers are choosing to used products. The number of reused-material stores in the U.S. has doubled in the past 5 years from 150 to 300.
The products these popular stores offer are usually well-made supplies from new construction sites and previous eras. They can be purchased at a fraction of their original cost.

Many of the stores are operated by non-profit organizations and obtain most of their products from donations. Many of the donated items come from buildings that have been torn down or "deconstructed" instead of being demolished.

Not all reusable building material is cheap. Mountain Lumber manufactures products from reclaimed wood. The company charges approximately $3000 for flooring for a 300 SF kitchen and around $8,000 for 800 SF. That price does not include installation.
