A Santa Clara, California school district has launched an innovative incentive program in which teachers are offered affordable apartments that have been built by the district.

The school district has 40 apartments that currently rent for $635 per month for one bedroom and $990 for two bedrooms. The current rent structure is enough to cover construction costs and maintenance of the units. They have 40 more apartments under construction.

The project is being overseen by the district's former superintendent, Paul Perotti. The project to date has cost $5.6 million; none of the cost coming from public funds.

The new complex is entitled "Casa del Maestro" which translates into "Home of the Teacher." Teachers may live in the complex for up to five years and then move on, ensuring turnover. Currently there are around 1,000 teachers in the district.
