40 Million American Moved in 2006
Upwards of 39.8 million Americans changed homes throughout 2006. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that around 50% were for housing-related purposes: like wanting a different sized home.
The Western part of the country had the highest rate of relocation at 16%. The Southern States followed at 15%, with the Midwest at 13% and the Northeast at 10%.

Who was moving? Hispanics had the highest percentage at 18%. African Americans were next at 17%, Asians 14%, and non-Hispanic whites at 12%.

Approximately 30% of all renters lived someplace else one year earlier. Only 7% of persons who moved owned their own homes.

62% of people who moved stayed within their same county. 20% moved to a different county within the same state. 14% relocated from a different state, while just 3% moved from abroad.
