These kinds of kitchens tend to fall into three categories: high-end, restaurant style kitchens for personal chefs and caterers. Kitchens for home cooking of foods which produce a lot of smoke or mess, and small, auxiliary kitchens used mainly on religious holidays or for entertaining.
Due to restriction of duplexing of properties in some areas, second kitchens are restricted in some areas. In places where laws prohibit these additional kitchens, owners sometimes opt for a Butler's pantry without a stove.
A Butler's pantry typically holds dishes, stemware, flatware and table linens. Countertops in this space are used as a staging area for dishes heading to the dining room table. Often the space contains a sink and dishwasher for cleanup purposes. It may also feature a wine cooler, an additional refrigerator and microwave oven, and be connected to walk-in pantries, refrigerators or freezers.
