For example; operating a power-hungry clothing dryer during overnight hours can be a lot less costly than operating it during the daytime hours.
The new device, known as a control panel is called an "eco-dashboard." It relies on cooperation with local utility companies. The companies must provide real-time information on electric rates in order for the system to operate. The utility companies involved must also price their power in a manner which reflects peak usage and non-peak usage rates. Currently, only a few utilities currently price energy this way.
With regular usage of the dashboard, home owners can see a significant savings on their power bills. GE states that with widespread use, the overall demand for power could be controlled and reduced to a point where utilities may not even need to construct new power plants.
The dashboard is currently only available in new homes, however GE has plans to start offering the device to owners of existing homes.
