UK Man Claims Responsibility for La Jolla School Bomb Threat
La Jolla native William Cooper came forward Monday to take responsibility for a phone call that prompted officials to shut down the La Jolla Country Day School last week. Cooper admitted to reporters that he was the one who made the call, but says he didn't make an actual threat and called the whole ordeal a misunderstanding. A resident of England, Cooper said he had called the school to see how his daughter was doing, and became frustrated when school staff would not tell him. "I said, 'What do you want me to say, I have a friend who's going to go down there to put a bomb in the school to get your attention?,'" the man noted in an interview.
A spokesman for the FBI, which is still investigating the alleged bomb threat, said that Cooper was specific in his threat, though Cooper denies that. The mother of Cooper's child said she did not think Cooper would actually bomb a school, but expressed regret that this many people were impacted by his actions. The woman has also notified staff at La Jolla Country Day school that she will withdraw her child from the school in the coming week.
