Trapped Whale Freed Off La Jolla Coast
US Coast Guard personnel, with the help of staff from Sea World San Diego, freed a humpback whale from a lobster trap line on Sunday about seven miles off the coast of La Jolla. A group of fishermen spotted the whale at about 9:30 Sunday morning and alerted the Coast Guard. Sea World dispatched two boats to assist, but one had engine problems so the Coast Guard sent a crew to assist. As the Coast Guard vessel approached the trapped whale, it got caught on a buoy float line that was being used as a beacon. When the line was pulled taught, the line connected to the lobster trap was freed, allowing the whale to swim away.
