State Refocuses on Creation of Marine Reserves
The California State Fish and Game Department announced earlier this month their intention to begin studies of where it may be appropriate to create marine reserves in waters up to three miles offshore in areas between Santa Barbara and the Mexican border. The studies are expected to begin early in 2008 and will include areas within San Diego County.
Environmentalists see the studies as an opportunity to rebuild declining fish populations in the coastal areas while fishermen and the companies that make products for fishermen see it as a threat to their livelihood.

This time around the studies are more likely to succeed given that they are better funded and has the successful creation of a 204-square-mile wildlife sanctuary in the central Coast of California last September to their credit.
