New Efforts Clean Park in Downtown San Diego
1996 was the year that marked the beginning of putting a plan in action for a wonderful park in downtown San Diego. But a year ago, things were not looking so good. The length of the construction had seemingly run down the area. Lack of upkeep and plenty of area to hide, provided a place where the homeless and drug addicts could frequent.
That was before the city of San Diego used vital tax dollars to give the park a one hundred thousand dollar makeover. The area has rid itself of the scary elements and is now "clean as a whistle". Helen Padilla, a longtime Coronado resident, said she stopped walking her dog in the area, because it just "got too bad". But recently she was driving by and was "stunned at the difference", saying she was going to "bring her dog back". A lot of the cleaning up effort was simply trimming and cutting down some of the trees. Nearly half of the trees that were once in the area, have been cut down and, in turn, have allowed the "light to come back in". Those who have recently purchased downtown San Diego condos in the vicinity are very happy about the progress. "I think my property value is increasing by the day" says downtown resident Mitch Schwarz.
