Stray dogs in Iraq live in the desert, outside of a town and survive off the scraps from people. They work as an
alert system to the town because they can hear something coming from miles away.
One day while Dennis was on patrol he noticed a dog that looked to be a German Shepherd mix. He decided to call the dog
Nubs, because of the dogs ears, or lack of. Someone had apparently cut off the dogs ears in hopes that it would make him
more aggressive.
As the weeks went by, Nubs continued to greet Dennis while he was on patrol. Dennis and the other Marines would feed the dog and Dennis soon
began to look forward to their meetings. After some time, Dennis began to notice that desert life was wearing on the dog and then eventually
came to find that Nubs had been stabbed with a screwdriver. Dennis cleaned the dogs wound and was expecting him to die by morning, but
Nubs hung in there and is now on his way to San Diego.
Dennis' family helped raise the money to ship Nubs overseas and when Dennis comes back, he and Nubs will be reunited and Nubs will
live the rest of his days in Dennis'
San Diego Home.
