Concern in Downtown San Diego
There is quite a bit of concern for downtown San Diego's well being and the worry is over a Marriott hotel. The concern is over the design of the hotel, which in turn, may cause visitors to spend more time in the hotel and not enough time and money on the rest of downtown San Diego. Some are comparing the design of the hotel to a "fortress", saying that visitors will be taken to the fifth floor, by elevator, to check in and then will become satisfied with all the restaurants and shops that reside on the floor.
The hotel is projected to play host to nearly a quarter of a million visitors per year. It will be located next to the Ballpark, but many people say there is not enough room for the hotel and that they will be cramming the hotel into the space.

Another concern is over the height of the hotel walls, which are projected to top 190 feet in some cases. That number is over twice the original plan and it has some wondering if it will appear too unwelcoming. In addition, it will also block certain views of the city, including a view of Coronado Bridge.

Although, there is concern over its place in the downtown San Diego environment, the hotel is expected to give the city of San Diego eighteen million dollars a year in taxes. This also translates into seven million dollars in yearly redevelopment taxes for downtown San Diego.
