Contract Awarded to Pasadena Company for Mid-Coast Trolley Extension
A Pasadena company has been awarded a $20 million, 7-year contract contract to begin preliminary work on the new mid-coast extension of the San Diego Trolley light-rail system which will eventually connect the current Old Town transit center with a new northern hub in University City at the soon-to-be revitalized University Towne Center. Preliminary projects include the providing of environmental documentation, transit planning and preliminary engineering of the project.
Parson's, the same firm that built the recently completed extension from Mission Valley East Trolley extension, is scheduled to begin major construction work in 2010 with a completion date in 2014. The $939 million dollar extension will be funded via the TransNet one half-cent transportation sales tax and by the federal government.

The new extension will begin at the Blue Line in Mission Valley, just south of the San Diego River. The 11-mile line will then run parallel to Interstate 5 with stops at Tecolote Road, Clairemont Drive, and Balboa Avenue. At Gilman Drive the line will continue north on the east side of Interstate 5 to a station located at Nobel Drive and Interstate 5. The line will then cross over 5 to the west side of the UCSD Campus with a station at the Price Center in the heart of the campus. After the Price Center stop, the line will cross over the 5 again to serve the east side of UCSD campus to a new stop there as well; then continuing east to a stop at Executive Drive and finally on to the new transit Center at University Towne Center.
