The purpose of the meeting was to vote on proposed paid street parking implementations for the Village area, surrounding neighborhoods and oceanfront areas.
The venue for the meeting proved to be too small to accommodate the number of people (who were mostly opposed to the proposals.) An estimated 150 people jammed the conference room and lobby of the Hotel Parisi, a boutique hotel on Prospect Street in the Village.
The 8-member board decided to eliminate the part of the proposal which would implement charges to park near oceanfront areas in La Jolla. Had that part of the proposal been enacted, La Jolla would have been the only area in the city of San Diego where people would have had to pay to park near the ocean. Many business owners in the Village shopping district of La Jolla are concerned over whether or not the installation of meters would free up more parking or simply turn potential customers away.
Another highly contentious issue is the proposed implementation of permitted parking in surrounding residential areas. Discussion regarding this topic was not address at the meeting as it was abruptly brought to a halt by the firefighters. The meeting has been rescheduled for Monday, November 19, and will reconvene at 9 AM at a larger facility, the La Jolla Recreation Center located at 615 Prospect St.
