SANDAG Long-Term Transit Plan Outlines Need for Change
By the year 2030, the San Diego region is projected to increase in population by an additional 1 million residents. SANDAG, (San Diego County Association of Governments) is currently working with county agencies to compose a viable plan for the future of the county's transportation requirements.
Highlights of the plans include construction of proposed additional carpool and/or toll lanes on Interstate 5 between Oceanside and Orange County and on Interstate 15 between Escondido and Riverside County.

The $57 billion in improvements has been criticized for placing too much emphasis on cars and not enough on public transit. Public transit is part of the plans; just not quite a detailed as the ones outlined for freeway expansion. Two major improvements in the county's transit system are nearing completion. The Sprinter rail line in the North County is scheduled to open next month, bringing very-much needed rail service to the inland cities between Escondido and Oceanside, which will provide a direct link to coastal rail service between San Diego and Los Angeles. Newly-constructed carpool lanes on Interstate 15 along with new bus lanes will soon provide enhanced capacity for both private autos and express bus service to downtown San Diego as well.

Additional future proposals include:

-Several projects which are aimed at improving the movement of cargo near the Mexico-U.S. border crossings.

-The proposed lanes on I-5 and I-15 to be constructed by 2030.

-Improved and expanded bus and rail service throughout the county.

-Improved biking routes throughout the county, with some new routes built as part of roadway expansion.
