The survey was entitled the 2009 Growth and Transportation Survey. The survey describes what American citizens think regarding the effect that development has on their immediate communities. Results showed that an overwhelming 80% of person's surveyed believe that it is more important that any stimulus plan contain plans to build public transit and repair existing highways and bridges rather than to construct new highways.
45% of persons polled stated that highways should either "definitely" or "probably" not be a part of a stimulus plan.
Results of the survey illustrate that American citizens want both Congress and the incoming administration to include plans which target the reduction of our dependence on foreign oil, increasing transit choices while focusing on the improvement of our environment. Survey results further show that Americans believe these concerns to be more of a priority even if the creation of jobs is delayed in the process.
The people of this country are also very concerned about energy conservation. Nearly ninety percent of persons polled agreed that any investments in transportation should work in tandem with any goals to reduce energy usage. Three out of four persons polled wish to have any stimulus package support a reduction of carbon emissions that attribute to climate change and global warming.
Transportation for America is a coalition which consists of environmental, public health, housing, transportation, urban planning, and other organizations which seek to organize national, state, and local transit policies. The group works with a variety of issues like climate change, housing and community development, energy security, and economic opportunity.
