UCSD Makes Discrete Job Cuts
The University of California San Diego has over the past few months made discrete cuts to their workforce. The university had trimmed the number of employees by over eight hundred, or five and one half percent of its total number of employees. The cause for the cuts is declines in state funding.
Stacie Spector, associate vice chancellor for university communications in an interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper explained that over 170 positions have received lay off notices, over 22 0open positions have been left unfilled, and nearly 430 jobs have been done away with.

The San Diego Union-Tribune speculates that additional lay offs could be in store for UCSD as the outcome of the state budget crisis remains unknown.

Both San Diego State University and Cal State San Marcos have not made any lay offs to date. These schools are however, on across the board hiring freezes for all non-essential jobs.
