8 Water Conservation Tips for Your Home
1. Repair small leaks from your pipes and faucets. These little "drips" can add up to big water waste.
2. Use the toilet only for its intended use! Avoid using your toilet as a trash can or ash tray. A large amount of water can be wasted flushing it when not necessary.

3. Repair toilet leaks. To detect if your toilet is "running" between flushes, place a bit of food coloring into the tank and look for streaks of it in the bowl. Most replacement parts for toilets are rather inexpensive and are easy to install yourself.

4. Utilize your water meter to detect hidden leaks in your home. Write down the reading of your meter and check it again after a 2-hour period of no water usage. If the meter reads differently, then there is a leak.

5. Install water-saving shower heads and low-flow faucets.

6. Place a plastic bottle or a float booster in your toilet tank. To cut down on water waste, place one or two inches of sand or pebbles into a plastic bottle, screw on the cap and place in your tank away from any of the mechanisms. This could help you save ten or more gallons per day if your home does not have low-flow toilets installed.

7. Insulate your hot water pipes. Install inexpensive pre-slit pipe insulation to get hot water from the tap a lot faster and waste less.

8. Take shorter showers. Typically, one four-minute shower takes 20-40 gallon of water.
