The next major addition to the institute was also recently announced. Construction will begin in 2010 on a new marine ecosystems laboratory. Scripps was awarded the grant for the new facility out of 93 applications which were submitted from around the world. Officials of the Institute stated that it is uncommon that federal funds are awarded for the constructions of new laboratories.
The new lab is planned to offer over 18,000 square feet of space and will focus on research programs dedicated to the understanding of how the oceans of the world function and how they are changing. The Institute plans on covering the $26.4 million price tag for the new lab with the federal grant, a loan, campus funds and donations.
Opening for the new $15.5 million conference center is set for March of 2009. Major construction is set to conclude by the middle of December. The center was designed by architect Taal Sadie of San Diego. The spaces were designed to resemble a village of small buildings. The conference center's proximity to the ocean was taken in consideration throughout the design process. Buildings were designed to not interfere with the Intuition's views of the Pacific.
