The enclosed beach was built in 1931 on the La Jolla coastline by the Scripps family and was enjoyed by seals and swimmers alike up until 2004 when a law suit was filed. The seals started to populate the beach a few years ago (or decades ago depending on whom you talk to). Somebody decided the seals were ruining the intent of the structure,(a safe place to swim) and the animal activist said the seals were there first and the battle has been on, and on, and on, and on ever since. The story was covered by all the local and National media; the LA Times, NY Times, the associated press etc., and the controversy has involved everyone from local residents and tourist to the Humane Society of the United States, the Mayor and City Counsel of San Diego, the State legislature and the Governor of California, and at least two congressional offices. Millions upon millions of tax dollars and hundreds of billable hours, and activist funds have been used, spent, wasted.
Now after all the money and time has been spent the courts have come to almost a non - decision, (the seals can stay or go depending on what the City Council decides). Now it can be re-named the "La Jolla Sealren's Pool" and hopefully La Jolla can move on to other things, like the cottages that are falling down at the Cove.
It has been predicted that 2010 will be a better year for the US economy because we can put the money that has been spent on the Children's Pool, or Casa Beach into real and important issues. (Wanna Bet?)
