Opinions and suggestions from the public are being sought regarding this project to continue the Trolley line to the UCSD/University City area from the Trolley Station at Old Town. While none of the 3 possible alternative routes are flawless, in that they will have some environmental effect and possibly necessitate the building of bridges and/or tunnels.
This new eleven mile long addition will go north using the existing railroad tracks to Gilman Drive at UCSD. It would then go west via the campus to the University City area or east via University City prior to going through the campus.
Tecolote Rd., Clairemont Dr., Balboa Ave., University Center Ln., both an east and a west site on the UCSD campus, and Executive Dr. may have stations. The plan is to create a large Transit Center at the University Towne Center shopping mall.
SANDAG (The San Diego Association of Governments) is hopeful that the costs of the venture will be shared equally by the TransNet Early Action Program, which has been approved by local voters, and the Federal Transit Administration New Starts Fund, which will be applied for when a decision has been made as to which route will be used.
