PATIO/BACK YARD SPACES ARE BECOMING THE SOCIAL CENTER OF THE HOME
As the kitchen inside the house is a get-together place for friends and family, the kitchen out back is now beginning to be the new social center. This development is especially popular in places that have a milder climate that allows for the nearly year around use of outdoor living areas.

Ever since the popularity of Home & Garden TV, people expect to get a lot of usage from their outdoor spaces. The al fresco kitchen is now becoming quite elaborate, with built-in grills, refrigerators, sinks, pizza ovens, and bars. An outdoor fireplace is often found as a main feature for the outdoor dining/living areas.

The outdoor kitchen is so fashionable mainly because they are so enjoyable to use. Meal preparation is not seen as an unpleasant task, but rather as a special occasion in which friends and family can have a good time. As an added bonus, an outdoor kitchen and/or living area makes the usable area of a home larger and increases its' worth.

Newly popular are the hybrid grills, which can cook with charcoal, gas or wood to suite the food that is going to be grilled. (Salmon grilled over apple wood is wonderful.) Also, pizza ovens are often being added and include the brick wood-fired, which take a long time to reach baking temperature as well as small counter top gas grills that are ready to bake a pizza in about twenty minutes.

When it comes to designing your outdoor spaces, give consideration to the manner in which it will be used, i.e., as a quiet, relaxing place or as a place where family and friends can cook, eat and socialize.
