SOME ITEMS THAT FIRST TIME BUYERS MAY NEED FOR THEIR NEW HOME
Once the escrow is closed, many first-time buyers are faced with the somewhat urgent need to furnish it. If they have been apartment-dwellers or living with their parents, they may not quite know where to start.

Many buyers find this to be an opportunity to cast off the old, often hand-me-downs and get something that more nearly reflects their own style. First time buyers spend an average of approximately $5,200 on furnishing their new home during their first year, with the most expensive items being bedroom furniture (with mattresses) and sofas for the living/family room.

As fifteen hundred square feet is the median size of the first home purchased, there may be quite a number of windows that need to have coverings for privacy. These should be included in any budget where needed. Also, as many now desire to paint and often to decorate the rooms, new owners may decide to buy new linens for bedrooms and baths.

Rooms are often planned around the probable placement of the entertainment center, which would include a flat screen television. This has become a must-have for many buyers. Many homes do come furnished with appliances; however, there may be the need to purchase at least some basics such as a stove, refrigerator, washer and dryer. As these are expensive items, they should be purchased prior to buying any items that are non-essential.

If there is going to be any lawn care required of the new homeowner, some garden tools will be needed. At least a lawn mower and hose should be the initial purchases.

Some basic tools will also be needed. Many home supply stores carry sets that are compact and store easily. They should include some basic screw drivers, a pair of pliers, a hammer, wrenches, and a tape measure. A staple gun may also come in handy.
