A recent survey reveals that potential home purchasers are now looking to buy smaller homes, with just 9 % wanting a home that is at least 3,200 square feet. Buyers are not looking for doll-house sized homes, though, as only 9 % saying that they would like to have a home from 800 to 1,400 square feet in size.
The most popular sizes were 1,400 to 2,000 square feet and 2,000 to 2,600 square feet, wanted by 28 % and 27 % respectively of those surveyed.
Historically, homes in America have grown from an average size of 982 square feet in the 1950's to 1,700 square feet in the 1980's to 2,350 square feet in 2004.
Nationally, there are fewer new homes being built having 3 or more bathrooms, and the square footage of new homes declined last year. Fewer two-storey homes are being built, and nearly all of the builders surveyed last year are going to be building homes with smaller square footage and lower prices than they have built in the past.
In the San Diego area, builders are providing homes with more usable square footage, smaller master baths, more casual areas, more "Green" components and options and more affordable prices.
