One of the programs on HGTV takes a look at several types of small spaces and shows how their designers use color, furnishings, various installations as well as other means in order to convey a feeling of roominess.
When painting a room if using any color other than white, use less intense colors in lighter, softer shades. Paint the ceiling the same color as the walls in order to carry the eye upward, rather than stopping at the top of the wall.
As for accent walls, they can be used, but remember that bold colors and/or darker shades make the wall visually advance towards you. This will make the room seem smaller.
Let there be light! When you let as much natural light into a room as possible, it creates a light and airy feeling and can make colors come alive. The space will also appear to be larger. Skylights and glass blocks can also allow light into an area while maintaining privacy. Mirrors reflect light and can brighten a room as well.
Ah, the furniture. Small-scaled furniture may make the room seem more open, but they are often less comfortable than pieces that are larger in scale. There is a compromise to be made by using fewer larger-scaled pieces.
Built-ins can save the day. The installation of a Murphy Bed allows the room to have other uses, and book shelves, cabinets and window seats can provide needed storage and design touches.
