Cyber Crime Tips for your Business protection
In conversation with Mills Team members the topic of viruses and scams came up. In a recent article in the local La Jolla and North San Diego County papers a new cyber threat was explained, and on the ABC, CBS and NBC local and national TV networks the topic of cyber warfare is a frequent headline story. Whether searching the web for real estate in La Jolla or Rancho Bernardo or looking for a new frozen yogurt most of us are careful about what we do and where we click. A new threat, scam, has been showing up for small business.

Yes! Here is one reason that may be very important. It is 2 Years versus 7 years.

The scam comes from an email that looks like it is from a legitimate vendor such as UPS or an Office Depot for example or any of the typical small business suppliers. When this apparent business email is clicked on it loads a Trojan worm into the computer and then steals passwords to banking internet accounts. This scam resulted in a $400,000 loss for a small escrow company in southern California, the email was suggesting click here to trace a lost package.

This kind of scam is a nightmare, but there are some security steps that you can take beyond your normal safety measures:
1. Speak with your bank about what steps they are taking for cyber security, and if the bank covers business and consumer losses from cyber theft.
2. Check your account often, looking for any unusual activity.
3. Check your security software daily for updates and scan any suspicious email, attachment or link.
4. Count 1, 2, and 3 then think before you click on any attachment, link or downloading a file.

Online banking and financial transactions can be much more efficient and cost effective, but it also requires an extra measure caution.
