Look again UCSD! It makes a very big impact on the state of California, and the world of science with its Medical School, Pharmacy school, Business management school, Jacobs School of engineering, 3 major hospitals and medical centers and associated research centers for Cancer, and soon a new Stem Cell research center, and one of the very few Super Computer centers in the world. To mention only a few of the more than 15 research centers that support everything from bio-tech and engineering, NASA and NOAA to the counting of all the species of ocean life in the world, I think it is over 196,000 at this point. By the way so you know it is not all "Hard Science", Drama and Dancing programs rated as some of the best in the country are on campus along with the world famous La Jolla Playhouse, which has been responsible for several "Broadway" hits.
UCSD is not as large as many in terms of undergraduate student (almost 50,000 applied for freshman entrance this fall about one in ten is accepted) a total of almost 30,000 students populate the campus. The average grade point of the entering students is 4.0+ (I don't even know how that is possible.) In one college guide UCSD is said to be number 2 of the best universities in the United States, and in an international publication from China ranking the academic quality of universities UCSD was rated 3rd.
The Budget of the Campus is estimated at over 2.6 billion. It has been estimated that the University contributes over 7.2 billion directly and indirectly to San Diego. UCSD is the third largest employer in the county with over 39,000 jobs. Employees come from La Jolla and University City, and the UTC area of course, but you will find faculty and staff in Del Mar, Solana Beach, Rancho Santa Fe, Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch, Downtown San Diego, South to Imperial Beach and north in Carlsbad and Oceanside, east to Ramona and west to Point Loma. The university has also spawned 193 start-up companies; one comes to mind in the tech industry Qualcomm that employs 1000s at its many locations throughout San Diego County and the world.
