Baby Boomers are Expected to Stay in Suburbs
A new study by the Brookings Institution shows that as baby boomers age, they are tending to stay put and not retire to other parts of the country. This trend brings about certain concerns for the slower-growing metropolitan areas that many boomers reside in. The study points out that public policies must begin to respond to the stresses that these aging residents will exert on transportation, social-support and health systems.
It is predicted that the senior population in the U.S. will begin to mushroom when the leading edge of the baby boomer generation reaches the age of 65 in 2011.

As a result of this change in mindset for aging boomers, so-called "pre-senior" populations are rapidly growing around the country. Sun Belt areas are seeing the largest growth. The cities of Austin, Dallas, Atlanta and Las Vegas are amongst the fastest growing. To give an idea of how much areas are expected to increase, the state with the slowest growth expectations is New York with a projected increase of a hefty 33% from 2000-2010.

As a result of the large number of boomer that choose to stay in place, many cites and towns will find themselves having to play catch up with the development of social services to meet the needs of their larger numbers of senior residents.
