Dubbed the BPC Housing Commission, the group will consist of former HUD Secretaries Henry Cisneros and Mel Martinez, former US Senator Kit Bond and former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, who co-founded the BPC in 2007. "The American Dream of homeownership recently turned into a nightmare for many families and, in turn, our neighborhoods, communities, and entire economy suffered. Solving these issues and addressing long-term questions on the role of government in housing will be no small stump to jump, but we cannot afford to fail," Bond said at a press event unveiling the commission.
The BPC Housing Commission will gather information from realtors, business leaders, former elected officials, and other interested parties, but will also hold public forums beginning with an event in the city where Cisneros was a popular mayor before joining HUD, San Antonio, Texas. That event ha sbeen tentatively scheduled for March next year, and the Commission will announce meetings in other cities in the coming weeks and months. As the BPC is a non-profit organization, executors of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation have agreed to supply all necessary funding for the commission's operating costs.
