83rd Annual La Jolla Rough Water Swim
Registration for the 83rd annual La Jolla Rough Water Swim will be held Saturday September 7th from 9 AM to noon at the Chase Bank location at 7777 Girard Ave. Scheduled for September 8th at 9 AM, the benefit event consists of five events with more than 1,300 participants expected to take part. The morning will begin with the 250 yard junior swim for boys and girls 12 and under. The 19-and-up women take to the ocean next for the Women's one mile Master's Classic at 11AM, followed by the one mile Men's Master's Classic at noon. The 3 mile "Gatorman" Championship, open to all swimmers aged 13 and up, begins at 1:30 PM and the one mile amateur swim for kids 13 to 18 gets under way at 1:35 PM.
The La Jolla Rough Water Swim began in 1916 as a warm-up for the World's Fair, held in San Diego, with a total of just seven swimmers signing up. Last year, over 1,300 athletes participated, and organizers are expecting an even bigger turnout this year. Steeped in history, the event is still governed by many of the same rules that were in place in the 1920s, including a bylaw that allows children to swim regardless of financial means. As a result, some of the $60 registration fee goes to covering entrance fees for underprivileged children. Another old rule still in place prohibits participants from wearing wetsuits.
The 83rd annual La Jolla Rough Water Swim will take place Sunday September 8th. All events will start and finish at La Jolla Cove, and proceeds will benefit Kiwanis programs that benefit area kids. Registration fees are $60 for youth swimmers, $70 for amateurs, $90 for Masters swimmers and $120 for those competing in the Gatorman event. For more information, Click Here.
