La Jolla Home Sells for Near-Record Price
A hilltop mansion in La Jolla sold for $18.5 million this week, marking the second-highest price ever paid for a home in the community. Attorney Bill Lerach paid $23.5 million for a nearby residence on a larger plot of land in 2005. The property sold this week was the home of TV producer Reinhold Weege, the executive producer of iconic television shows like "Barney Miller" and "Night Court" who passed away last December. The 15,000 square-foot mansion formerly belonged to Salk Institute President Frederic de Hoffman, whose widow left the property to the institute when he passed away. Weege paid $4.38 million for the property in 1995, and has made substantial improvements in the years since.
