About University City / UTC
UTC, sometimes referred to as the "Golden Triangle" is a lovely community tucked on the east side of La Jolla and along Rose Canyon,
with parks, walking trails, housing, thriving business complexes, shopping, and great food.
The area was originally developed with the thought of providing housing for students, professors,
researchers and administrators of University of California-San Diego, Salk institute and Scripps
Oceanography. This area started growing quickly after the big shopping mall, University Towne
Center was completed in 1977, now a Westfield Regional Mall, with approximately 200 shops and
restaurants. However, over the years, it has grown to be a tight-knit family community with
elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. In addition, the area has become an ideal amalgam of office complexes, research facilities and financial institutions, such as Citibank, U.S. Bank and Salomon Smith Barney.
One of UTC's features is its excellent freeway access and the mixed-use development of the
UTC area make it an attractive place to live and, according to the 2000 Census, almost 35,000 people call it home.
